“People’s faces and figures fascinate me. Sometimes, it is the beauty and attractiveness of the face or figure; sometimes, it is another element. It could be the anatomical structure, attitude, outfit, pose, or energy. It could be the deep wrinkles on leathery skin that make me think of the myriad life stories that the person carries or a complex facial expression with mixed emotions. When I sense such a unique quality, I am inspired to paint”.

Edi Matsumoto was born and raised in Japan where she studied anthropology at Tsukuba University. After traveling and volunteering in Southeast Asia, she moved to the U.S and earned a Master's degree in Nursing, and continues to work in the healthcare field. In 2018, she earned her second Master's degree in Fine Art from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Matsumoto’s work has won numerous awards and has been shown at galleries and museums locally, nationally and internationally including the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the Triton Museum of Arts in Santa Clara, and Pacific Grove Art Center among others.
