THE STORY OF ARTIST:
HEIDI HOROWITZ
“I USE PHOTOGRAPHY TO CREATE IN A VARIETY OF WAYS: ONE IS AS A PHOTO-AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY ('MIRROR, MIRROR') DEPICTING CERTAIN TIMES OF MY LIFE WHETHER THEY WERE HAPPY, CAREFREE AND EASY, OR MORE DARK, UNPLEASANT AND DIFFICULT. RATHER THAN USING SELF PORTRAITS, I USED BARBIE DOLLS, EACH SPECIFICALLY CHOSEN TO BEST FIT THE EMOTION OR ACTION. SOME OF THESE WERE STAGED IN STUDIO, OTHERS SHOT 'ON THE GO' WHILE CARRYING AROUND A VARIETY OF DOLLS IN MY BAG OVER THE COURSE OF FOUR YEARS. I ALSO TEND TO SEARCH FOR A SENSE VISUAL BALANCE IN MY PHOTOGRAPHY, CREATING (FOR ME) A SENSE OF CALM THROUGH COMPOSITION, EITHER IN BLACK AND WHITE OR COLOR, WHETHER IN LANDSCAPES, SEASCAPES OR CITY SCENES. OTHER ONGOING PROJECTS ('ANTICIPATION' AND 'LOOKOUT') DEAL WITH ANXIETY AND FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN. MY HOPE IS TO HAVE VIEWERS SEE A PART OF THEIR OWN SELVES IN MY PHOTOGRAPHS.”
