IRIS DE LEEUW
“I am passionate about human freedom, communication, play and experiment. Creating is fundamental to my existence - any material or technique seems useful in different situations. To be wild is essential, no rule or fashion is allowed. I like to wait for my call, my vision or dream. The process of creating is most exiting in making my works.
My first project was inspired by the ideas of the artist Constant Nieuwenhuis' about playful humans in the future. My so-called Speespak is Dutch for space suit, and literally means ‘giving space to each other’. Playful Man, or Homo Ludens, was created for a socially engaged artists’ movement in 1966. These ideas never left me, they continue to be a source of my inspiration.
I started my own silkscreen print studio in 1967 and was the first woman in the Netherlands to make silk screen posters for student oppositions, third world projects, and environmental and cultural subjects. Color, people, and nature are important to me. In addition to printing, I create other art projects in different disciplines. I love to learn new skills”.
