JANINE BROWN
“I have been creating since grade school. Whether it was designing and creating my own clothing; making jewelry; or experimenting with various mediums to express my ideas; I have always had a desire to create.
With my art, my goal is to create a dialogue between my work and the viewer that lingers in the viewer’s mind beyond the moment of interaction.
My work is concept driven informed by my personal experiences. The mediums I use change based on what I feel will best express my idea.
In our "social media" focused world, people are obsessed with image. Influencers curate images of their lives that make their lives seem perfect. My body of work, "Social Distortions", is a commentary on this phenomenon. Using appropriated photographs from photographers, I transfer their image onto a wallpaper substrate. The photo transfers are not always perfect .... representing a person's flaws. Each image is then made "perfect" by collaging new features and surroundings on the person using images from fashion and lifestyle magazines, thus hiding the flaws and creating a perfect new persona.”
