THE STORY OF ARTIST:
Yana Ushakova
“Fifteen years later, I’ve come to terms with my cancer experience, and have been digging deep into the ephemerality of my own physicality. I confront the beauty of today’s body of survival, the vulnerability, destruction, and recovery within. I turn my subjects inside out to expose their true nudity. Sometimes it’s sexy. Sometimes it’s ugly. And best of all, sometimes it’s both. But I strive to portray my subjects as self-possessing, perhaps discomforting to the viewer in their own self-assertion, dissection, and contortion. The materials lend themselves like flesh to the canvas and I really like that. The work is autobiographical, hence the “Auto”-anastomoses.”
