ANGELA WILSON

“My artwork alludes to the memory process between remembered and forgotten trauma, fantasies, objects, and images.

Unconsciousness and memory; automatism and doodling; what remains in your mind or the collective unconscious of people? ” - Angela Wilson

“Landscapes, urban atmosphere, portraits, historical photographs, maps, and texts; are the first strata of my work that moves among abstraction and figuration.

By hiding form and filling the canvas with overlapping layers of oozes, drippings, ink, and print marks, I create a symbolic space in which time converges in a deep sum of different material coverings: trans lucid veils, wash using ink-diluted water, drawing, digital prints or crusts of paint.”

Angela Wilson was born in Santiago de Chile, where she lives and works. She has a BA Visual Arts, U. Católica de Chile (1977-1981) and MA, U. Adolfo Ibáñez, Chile (2008).

Carried out a Visual Literacy summer class at SVA, NY (2008). Participated in art residences in Factoria Santa Rosa, Santiago de Chile (2015); Bodegón Cultural de Los Vilos, Coquimbo, Chile (2019); and Gate 44, Milano, Italy (2019), and has participated in ARSFACTUS, a Women’s art collective, since 2014.

About "The Phantasm " Series:

Phantasm is a body of work in which historical photographs were the substrate of the artwork. This series, Projections, are an homage to Wilson´s grandaunt Teresa Wilms Montt (b. 1893 -1921).

An entangled process between Teresa´s and Angela's work, where psychological and literal projections turned on several portraits painted in trans-lucid fabrics.

Teresa Wilms Montt's photographs and poems were projected and drawn, stitched in layers of veils, creating a symbolic space in which time converges in a deep sum of different material coverings. This chilean poet exemplifies feminist claims.

The Phantasm series acknowledges the work hidden behind her tragic life. This homage intends to repair years of Therese ́s invisibility and artist women's struggles.
