“Inspiration strikes every morning when I wake up. My hard drive contains thousands of photographs I have not yet seen. I immediately look forward to playing with them and eagerly await the arrival of surprise, serendipity, and synchronicity. Often my best work appears as a total surprise – a discovery really. That aha moment is unparalleled in its power, yet the process of creating even a mediocre image is perfectly sublime.
My first exposure to Kandinsky and Braque inspired me to pursue visual art. However, those experiences occurred well over half a century ago. Today the joy of work/play is self-generated.
Radical play is a simple and direct approach to creating alchemy/art. It bypasses the ego and mind and directly addresses the emotions, the senses, and the soul. I worked with model Katrin Dohse for this series. Her freshness, concentration, and athleticism were perfect for the shoots. Play is a natural alchemical process. It allows the opposite poles of openness and intent to inhabit the same space. It is with this seeming paradox that the magick of alchemy can flow freely. In being open to how intent will manifest we experience outcomes that are surprising and beyond the limits of the mind. ”
