DAINA STABULNIECE
Daina Stabulniece is an artist from Northern Europe, where she studied, painted, and was a self-described keen observer of life.
"When you live in a land that is far from the sun with long winters, it becomes necessary to imagine a personal world of warmth, and light. The key to accessing this world for me has been my knowledge of traditional painting techniques. To bring my dreams into existence, I have found it necessary to explore new shapes of light and the integration of figure and space.
I have changed and expanded the nature of my work to incorporate the substantial light and color that I experienced here. We live in an environment of constantly changing weather and natural elements, causing us to be aware of ourselves in space and time. In my recent work, I use metal and aluminum surfaces - silver, gold, and copper leaf, treating them with chemicals to age. Rust becomes a dominant element, overtaking color and figure, constantly reminding us of the aging of everything around us, and of course the aging of ourselves"
