THE STORY OF ARTIST:
DIRK ATKINSON
“I learned to paint with oils at 12 years old. Since then I have drawn, painted and sculpted; always making and creating with my mind and hands. In the 1980’s I found myself inspired by the beauty of northern California and started painting landscapes. As I became more passionate about my work I enrolled at Sonoma State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2019. Now, as an artist, my work has evolved, become looser and expressionistic. I started painting with more freedom when I moved away from representational work and painting from my mind’s eye.
As my perspective on life has matured, I now take my creative inspiration and passion for new work from my experience, feelings and current frame of mind; which I term, “ My Point of Departure”. As I embark on new work I allow my creative emotions to interpret and guide the composition. I mostly work in oil on canvas, or panel, however, I have steadily added mixed media elements such as linen, Impasto 3d printed elements, and occasionally encaustic, to give these works a 3D element and allow the viewer to discover a deeper meaning within each composition.”
