Steven' G. Fajana

Art and creativity have always mesmerized Steven ‘Gb-yega Fajana, captivating him since his youth with their infinite mixes and variations. As an emerging artist based in London, he earned his master’s degree in design and media arts from the University of Westminster. A self-taught multidisciplinary artist, Fajana's work spans photography, painting, video, moving images, and dance-on-screen film. He explores visual gestures and narrative possibilities within a type of "galleria."

Fajana's early works focused on dance-on-screen films, utilizing the movement and dance of a dancer's body as the protagonist. This approach examines spatial boundaries through the fugitive body's gestures, relating to the act of spatial scenography.

Initially starting as a dancer, Fajana has always been fascinated by the dialogue between the visual nuances of artistic forms and their elusive expressions. His dance-for-the-camera films have been screened and exhibited both nationally and internationally. His African identity and childhood memories profoundly influence his creative space, infusing his work with a rich cultural perspective.

Drawing inspiration from various artistic media and artists such as Ben Enwonwu, Isaac Julien, Roy Lichtenstein, Basquiat, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Joan Miró, and Young-Deok Seo, Fajana's art and studio practice focus on the visual narrative process. He employs available mediums to convey his artistic vision.

Fajana's work highlights visual nuances, emphasizing the importance of seeing before words. He believes that seeing establishes one's place in the surrounding world, and while words attempt to explain this visual idiom, they can never fully capture the essence of being surrounded by it.
