SUZAN MICHELE POWERS
Suzan Michele Powers began painting with watercolors at the age of three. Encouraged by her grandmother, who sometimes framed her work, she developed her artistic talents from a young age. At 19, she declared her major in art in college, pursuing a path that combined art and teaching through her graduate studies. Powers earned a Master of Arts in Teaching in Art and became a national art specialist for all age groups, teaching across the United States.
In the 1980s, she began incorporating musical subjects into her artwork and was discovered by a New York gallery, leading to a show in 1989. That same year, she shifted her focus to the ocean coast and started painting the California Marine Life Sanctuaries. In 1992, she founded Starbell Enterprises, launching with four greeting cards featuring watercolors of the new Monterey Bay Marine Life Sanctuary. Her watercolor series expanded to include four different sanctuaries, with plans to add a fifth by 2024, encompassing 21 scenes and over 5,000 products available as prints and on gift items.
In 2015, Powers turned her focus to themes of climate change and crisis, which now form the core of her current portfolio. Alongside this, she developed The Commission, featuring spiritual and Biblical verses, using acrylics, diamond dust, metallic powders, and gold leaf on textural surfaces. Both original art and prints from these works are available.
