STEPHEN SPILLER

Spiller bases his work on examining social, cultural, and political behaviors. His images are sourced from his own photographs as well as work recontextualized from other areas, such as the internet, and print publications. Spiller often examines themes of race, economic disparity, education, gun violence, and much more. Spiller finds inspiration from Basquiat and Banksy. He uses text, digital manipulation, humor, and satire to express his ideas. He considers his work documentary as well as conceptual.

“Central to my thinking is that emotions driving such behaviors are largely beyond conscious awareness. Consequently people rarely explore, let alone resolve, issues surrounding why they act as they do; they literally don’t know, and will never care to understand or learn, who they really are. Given that circumstance, my work is intended to raise “mindfulness” on the subjects of identity and consequential behavior, avoiding otherwise predictable experiences of loneliness, confusion and isolation.”

Spiller lives in Long Island City, NY, USA. He has been published in Musee Magazine and is a member of the Los Angeles Art Association. Spiller has exhibited in ninety+, museums, and galleries worldwide, including in New York, California, Tokyo, Beijing, and more. He is also a founding member of FotoNostrum, the largest photography gallery in Barcelona, Spain.
